OLR: Exercise 4 cont. – Topic 1

What is workflow?

To me workflow is the process and procedure of performing task. These tasks are a routine and need to be performed to follow a certain set of rules.

Wikipedia Descibes workflow as

A workflow is a reliably repeatable pattern of activity enabled by a systematic organization of resources, defined roles and mass, energy and information flows, into a work process that can be documented and learned. Workflows are always designed to achieve processing intents of some sort, such as physical transformation, service provision, or information processing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Workflow

http://www.e-workflow.org Describes workflow as:

The automation of a business process, in whole or part, during which documents, information or tasks are passed from one participant* to another for action, according to a set of procedural rules.

And finally techtarget.com descriebs workflow as:

Workflow is a term used to describe the tasks, procedural steps, organizations or people involved, required input and output information, and tools needed for each step in a business process

OLR: Exercise 4 – Topic 1

An introduction about myself.

My name is Simon Jankowski I am 28 years old and I live on the NSW Central Coast.

I have been working in IT for many years after completing my Diploma of IT.

I am currently studying at CSU by DE. and am undertaking this subject and doing my IT project.

I decided to study this subject as online work and communities have interested me since I first got onto the internet. Back in 1999 I was part of an Online Massively Multilayer Online Role playing Game called Ultima Online. This world amazed me and I have been hooked ever since.

OLR: Exercise 1 – Topic 1

What is CSCW?

From my readings and experience and exposure with various systems and technologies over the years I have come to know CSCW as using technology to allow people to interact and and collaborate on work and projects online. This allows people in geographicsally distant areas to contribute and work together on projects without the need for face to face interaction.

From WikiPedia

CSCW [is] a generic term, which combines the understanding of the way people work in groups with the enabling technologies of computer networking, and associated hardware, software, services and techniques.

What are online Communities?

Online communities are where people from all over the world come together to interact and achieve something together through means of the internet. These communities quite often stem from similar interests and hobbies. E.g Gaming forums, car forums, pets etc. One such example of an online community is www.stratics.com which is a gaming website that covers a multitude of games each having forums and information allowing people to interact.

Community: A portal is a web site where the defining characteristic is the concept of
belonging.
